v0.3.1 - The 3D Update
Planets For Sale » Devlog
After Demo Day 56, I got really excited and started planning out a whole bunch of features to add to the next big version. After several months of fast iterations, I felt I would be able to add all of the following to the next version:
- Contracts!
- Random events!
- More planets!
- More buildings!
- 3D art with animations!
- Audio!
Sadly, I had to skip Demo Day 57 and even with the extra time, I didn't accomplish as much as I had planned to. There's not that much changed as far as core gameplay goes. Some progress is better than none, so we keep moving forward! Even up to this release, my creative juices have been going hard coming up with new mechanics to add and how to explore them fully. Work will continue on Planets For Sale.
Version 0.3.1 Changelog
Major Changes
- Added Contracts. Contracts are a special mechanic that can reward you for selling certain types of goods or selling enough of them, though the clients will only wait so long before penalizing you.
- Power has been revamped based on feedback from the A/B testing. Players now start with 25 power per planet, and buildings now cost Power to use, with most increasing upon every use. You no longer have to repower buildings after using them.
- Planets and buildings now have 3D scenes instead of static images.
- Added sound effects.
Minor Changes
- Added Partial Prestige. Hitting +3 partial prestige will reward you with 1 full Prestige, while hitting -3 partial prestige will subtract 1. Currently the main way of earning these is through Contracts.
- Added a new planet: Dorado, a planet made entirely out of gold.
- Added a new planet: Oortian Wake, a cloud of stardust blown into orbit.
- Added a new resource: Ice
- Added a secondary ability to the basic buildings to view various reports or other important information.
- Expand Operations shows the Deposit Report, showing what resources you can expect to find from a new Deposit.
- Trading Hub shows the current Contracts.
- Depart shows the Hub Report, detailing the resources currently in play.
- Logistics Network shows the Logistics Report, detailing resources you can pull.
- Added various volume options to the options menu.
- Buildings now show their name on their icon.
- Command Hub's primary ability is now "2 Power -> Give another building a 5 Power discount". Power discounts lower the power cost to use a building and carry over if not fully spent.
- Depart's primary ability now shows how much money you will make upon activating it.
- Hardlight Array's secondary ability is now "$15b -> +1 Power".
- Logistic Network's primary ability now costs $5b to pull a resource.
- Quotas have been added to the planet selection view.
- Research Team's secondary ability has been removed.
- Removed flavor text from tooltips.
- Trading Hub's primary ability no longer costs money to sell resources.
- Updated the user interface while on planets.
Bug Fixes
- Fixed players being unable to return to the main menu from the endgame view.
- Fixed Steelworks not returning any spent Iron when cancelling its abilities.
- Fixed a whole lot of bugs.
Known Issues
- There is a known issue where Contracts that should be achieved just don't. I've added logging to try and catch this. If you happen to encounter this, please share your logs as soon as it happens.
- Windows log location: %APPDATA%\Godot\app_userdata\Planets For Sale
- Linux log location: ~/.local/share/godot/app_userdata/Planets For Sale
- Originally there was going to be music in this build. Due to licensing issues, this has been removed. Enjoy the silence?
What's Next?
- Building selection. This whole game was based off of the concept of an economic rogue-like, so it makes sense that you would be able to pick and choose the buildings at your disposal. This would also require additional buildings, which I know has been a complaint since the first build.
- Random events. This would add some flavor and help expand upon some of the mechanics already added.
- 8 planets total. 8 planets, 8 rounds, 8 is a good number.
- Music (hopefully)
